About the book

Set in 1970s Mexico City during the Dirty War, the narrative follows Maite, a reclusive secretary obsessed with romance comics, and Elvis, a criminal enforcer for a government-sanctioned hit squad. When Maite’s neighbor Leonora disappears, Maite begins searching for her while Elvis is concurrently hired to track down Leonora’s missing camera. Their separate investigations lead them through a network of student radicals, political spies, and corrupt police officers against the backdrop of the Corpus Christi Massacre and state-sponsored violence.

Readers of historical noir and political thrillers choose this book to understand the atmosphere of paranoia and civil unrest in Cold War-era Mexico. It appeals to those who prefer character studies over traditional action. The reader walks away with a detailed view of how systemic propaganda and government repression isolate individuals, alongside a specific historical account of the tensions between student protesters and the paramilitary groups designed to suppress them.
