About the book

Edward Waverley, a young English officer, is posted to Scotland in 1745, on the eve of the Jacobite rising. He visits the Highland chief Fergus MacIvor and his sister Flora, and the old Baron Bradwardine and his daughter Rose, and is drawn into the cause of Bonnie Prince Charlie, though he hesitates between loyalties and between the two women. After the defeat at Culloden he has to deal with the consequences, and with the fate of his friends.

Walter Scott's novel launched the historical novel as a form, and it shows a Scotland changing from clan society to a modern state. It suits readers of classic fiction who enjoy history, landscape and a hero caught between sides.
