About the book

In 1963 Mississippi, nine-year-old Starla Caudill, a spirited girl with a hard home life, runs away. On the road she meets Eula, a Black woman travelling with a white toddler who is not hers. Together, the girl, the woman and the baby make their way along back roads and through suspicious towns. Susan Crandall gives Starla's voice as a child who gradually learns the realities of race and loss in the Civil Rights era.

Readers who like Southern historical fiction with a strong young narrator will find a warm, readable road story. It is about trust between unlikely companions and about the families we choose.
