Hana lives in a Korean fishing village during the Japanese occupation in 1943, where she is a young woman who dives for a living. When Japanese soldiers come, she is taken as a "comfort woman" to serve in a military brothel, to save her younger sister Emi. Mary Lynn Bracht alternates between Hana's experience in the war and the life of Emi in Seoul in 2011, who is still looking for her sister after sixty years. The novel is based on the real history of Korean women forced into sexual slavery and shows the lasting damage.
It's for readers who want a historical novel about a subject that is often ignored. Be prepared for painful scenes, though the book is written with care and focus on resilience.
