Athena, a woman of Romanian Roma birth who was adopted by a wealthy Lebanese family and raised in Beirut and London, becomes a spiritual teacher in London who leads rituals dedicated to the Great Mother. The novel tells her life through interviews with people who knew her, including her adoptive mother, a former teacher, and a journalist, each giving a different view of her. Paulo Coelho uses their accounts to discuss feminine spirituality, belonging, and the clash between charisma and public suspicion.
It suits readers of Coelho's earlier fables who want a more contemporary setting, and anyone curious about spiritual seeking. The multiple-narrator structure gives it a mosaic quality that keeps it moving.
