About the book

Maria grows up in a small village in Brazil, disappointed by early love experiences. A Swiss man promises her a career as a samba dancer in Geneva, but the job turns out to be a trap and she becomes a prostitute. She starts keeping a diary, recording clients, her thoughts about sex and her determination to save money and return home. When she meets the painter Ralf Hart, she must decide whether she can mix love and desire. Paulo Coelho tells the story in simple, direct prose with parable-like touches, treating sexual experience as a way toward self-knowledge.

Readers who enjoyed other Coelho novels will find familiar concerns. It also suits people interested in stories of women claiming agency in a hard setting, although its philosophical approach can feel a little neat.
