After the Banquet by Yukio Mishima
Insights from After the Banquet
Kazu runs an entire restaurant empire but crumbles when she falls for an old politician. She thinks she can manage a husband like a business. It does not work that way.
“To be more precise, he wanted the Kazu that was his wife, but he did not want the Kazu that was the owner of the Setsuguan.”
Noguchi is so obsessed with his own dignity that he treats Kazu more like a trophy than a partner. He wants her fire gone. He prefers a quiet house over a happy wife.
The election scenes show how money and grit matter way more than ideals. Kazu spends her fortune to buy a dream for a man who hates her methods.
“He was a man who lived by his principles, and principles are often very inconvenient things.”
Noguchi values his reputation above everything else. He would rather lose a race than get his hands dirty. Kazu is the only one willing to do the real work.
