Harlan Ellison's 1972 sequel to Dangerous Visions collects stories from forty-some writers asked to break the taboos and conventions of science fiction. Alongside Ellison's own long introductions, which give background on each author, it includes Ursula K. Le Guin's The Word for World Is Forest and many experimental, unsettling or satirical pieces on sex, religion, war and politics.
It is a landmark of New Wave science fiction and a good pick for readers who want to see how the genre changed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Quality varies, as in any large anthology, but the ambition is the point.
Deep and open-ended; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Story Seeker. Which reader are you?
