Written in 1980 and published only in 2002, Amberes is a collection of short, fragmentary chapters that blur prose and poetry. Scenes of a narrator wandering, encounters in a campground, a murder and fleeting images all appear without a clear plot. The title is the Spanish name for Antwerp, though the city appears only in glimpses.
It is for readers of Roberto Bolaño who want to see his early experimental writing before The Savage Detectives and 2666. It is not a conventional novel, so approach it as a series of strange, vivid fragments.
Open-ended and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Deep Diver. Which reader are you?
