The ghost of the dead King of Denmark appears on the walls of Elsinore and tells his son Hamlet that he was poisoned by his brother Claudius, now king and married to the widowed queen Gertrude. Hamlet, a student home from Wittenberg, feels obliged to avenge him but is unsure whether the ghost can be trusted. He feigns madness, stages a play-within-a-play to catch the conscience of the king, and mistakenly stabs Polonius behind a curtain. Ophelia's grief and Laertes's anger lead to the final duel.
This is for readers who want the original play, with its famous speeches and its questions about action, mortality and truth. It is also one of the best ways to understand why Shakespeare matters.
Deep, inward-looking, contemplative, open-ended and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Wisdom Collector. Which reader are you?
