A famous Viennese novelist receives a long letter on his birthday from a woman he does not remember. She writes that she is writing to him on the night her child has died and that she, too, is ill, and she needs him to know the truth. She has loved him since she was a girl living in his building, followed him through his life in secret, and spent one night with him, which resulted in a son he never knew. Stefan Zweig tells the story as one long confession in her voice, published in 1922.
Readers of short, intense classics will find a novella with real emotional force. It is also a clear study of devotion that goes unnoticed.
Deep, inward-looking, contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
