David is back, and this time his misbehavior leads to a series of scoldings from his mother and a trip to his room. He tracks mud across the kitchen floor, gets into a food fight, hits a stranger with a baseball, draws on the walls, and plays with his food. Each time, a grown-up says his name in exasperation, and the book returns to the same refrain. At the end, though, his mother shows that she loves him no matter what. David Shannon's rough, vivid paintings and short lines of text provide the humor.
It suits preschoolers and early readers, and parents who want to read something funny about discipline with a warm ending. Children will spot themselves in his mistakes. The pacing is steady, and the book can be picked up again easily after a break.
Practical, outward-looking and clear-cut; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Practical Optimizer. Which reader are you?
