Der Tod in Venedig und andere Erzählungen

by Thomas Mann

2000•Fischer-Taschenbuch-Verlag•DE
About the book

Gustav von Aschenbach, a celebrated German writer in his fifties, travels to Venice, where he becomes fascinated by a beautiful Polish boy, Tadzio, whom he sees at his hotel. Thomas Mann's novella follows his growing obsession as a cholera epidemic spreads through the city and he refuses to leave. The book also includes other stories, such as Tonio Kröger and Tristan.

It is for readers of classic German literature. It is a careful study of art, desire and decline. Mann's controlled prose makes the decline of the writer both beautiful and disturbing, and the other stories in the volume show his range.

Reading profile

Deep, inward-looking, open-ended and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
