About the book

At the end of 1951, Ernesto Guevara, a young Argentine medical student, and his friend Alberto Granado, a biochemist, set off on an old Norton 500 called La Poderosa to travel across South America. The diary records mishaps, hunger and a night in a leper colony in Peru, along with Guevara's growing awareness of poverty and injustice among the continent's workers and Indigenous peoples. His voice is witty and curious, and the later revolutionary is only hinted at.

Readers who like travel writing and who want to know the person before the icon will enjoy it. It shows how a road trip, and the people met along it, can change the direction of a life.
