Callie is a seventh-grader who loves theater, and she takes charge of the set design for her middle school's production of the musical Moon Over Mississippi. She has big ideas for the sets, but she must work with a small crew, a low budget and a sound system that does not work. Meanwhile, she develops crushes on boys, including a pair of twins, Justin and Jesse, and has to deal with drama among the cast and crew, and a tight deadline. Raina Telgemeier tells the story in colorful panels about friendship, first crushes and who one really is.
It is a good choice for middle-grade readers who enjoy graphic novels about school life, and for anyone who has worked behind the scenes in theater. The tone is friendly, funny and inclusive.
