In the near future, astronaut Gerald Livingstone is in orbit when he is sent to collect a piece of space debris, which turns out to be a crystal that is an artifact of alien origin. The object contains information about countless civilizations that have vanished, and it seems to hold a warning. David Brin follows many characters across the globe, including a journalist, a scientist and a politician, as humanity tries to understand the message and to avoid a threat. The novel also imagines technology, social media and artificial intelligence in the coming decades.
Readers who like hard science fiction with large ideas about the future of civilization and about the Fermi paradox will find an ambitious novel. It suits those who enjoy big casts and speculation about technology.
Outward-looking and escapist; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Curious Generalist. Which reader are you?
