Jillian and Megan work together at an office job they both find dull. Megan is unhappy and resentful, and Jillian is relentlessly positive, and the book follows their cramped, passive-aggressive relationship, narrated in alternating chapters. Halle Butler is merciless about both women, and the humor comes from the pettiness, self-deception and boredom of modern work.
It suits readers who enjoy dark, uncomfortable comedy about ordinary dissatisfaction in the style of Ottessa Moshfegh. Read it if you want a very short novel that makes you laugh while feeling slightly implicated.
Inward-looking and thought-provoking; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Story Seeker. Which reader are you?
