About the book

Jim Button is a little black baby who arrives by mail on the tiny island of Lummerland, where the island's only inhabitants are the king, a shopkeeper named Mrs. Waas, Mr. Ärmel, and the engine driver Lukas with his locomotive Emma. When the island becomes too crowded, Lukas and Jim set out with Emma on a voyage across the sea. They travel to China and the land of Mandala, where they find the kidnapped princess Li Si, and they must face a dragon. Michael Ende wrote the book for children as a classic adventure.

It suits children from about seven, and adults who want a warm, humorous read-aloud about friendship and courage. Families who enjoy old-fashioned adventure stories with unusual characters will find it charming.
