About the book

Bastian is a lonely, overweight schoolboy who steals a strange book from a bookshop and reads it in the school attic. The book tells of Fantasia, a magical realm threatened by the Nothing, and of the Childlike Empress, who is ill. A young hunter, Atreyu, receives the task of saving her and sets out with the luck dragon Falkor, crossing the Swamps of Sadness and meeting Morla, the Ancient One. Gradually Bastian understands that he plays a part in the tale. Michael Ende combines adventure with a meditation on imagination and what it costs to lose yourself in your own wishes.

It suits children and adults who enjoy fantasy about books and storytelling. Parents reading with older children, and anyone who loved the film but never read the novel, will find a richer and darker story waiting.
