About the book

Roberto Bolaño's collection brings together fourteen stories about writers, lovers, soldiers and exiles in Chile, Mexico and Spain. In "Sensini," a young writer corresponds with an older Argentine author over contest prizes. Others follow men and women through obsession, failed ambition and unexpected loyalty, often with a narrator who looks a lot like Bolaño. The title story is about a series of strange calls that mark a love affair.

It is a good entry point for readers new to Bolaño's fiction. The stories are short and varied, show his interest in poets and failure, and reward you with a sense of how he saw literature.

Reading profile

Deep and thought-provoking; a moderate read.

Best for readers like The Wisdom Collector. Which reader are you?
