Mariana Enriquez's stories take place in Argentina, where ordinary neighborhoods hide ghosts, curses and violence. A woman is haunted by a dead girl at a rental house, a boy is drawn to a mysterious dirty child in the street, and a girl turns into a witch-like figure in a school. Poverty, state brutality and the memory of the dictatorship shade the supernatural elements, so that horror reads as social commentary as well.
Recommended for readers of contemporary horror and Latin American short fiction who want chilling, politically aware stories. Short story fans will enjoy the variety, and anyone who likes Shirley Jackson or Samanta Schweblin should pick this up for an unnerving evening.
Deep; a moderate read.
