Juan is a Black Argentine man with a rare ability to act as a medium for the Order, a secret society devoted to gaining eternal life by contacting a darkness that demands terrible sacrifices. His wife has died, and he tries to keep his young son Gaspar away from the cult as they travel across Argentina. The book then moves into the dictatorship era and the 1980s, following a group of young friends, and shows how private horror and national violence intersect.
