Paul Bäumer is a young German who enlists with his classmates in 1914, urged on by a schoolmaster's patriotic speeches. The front teaches him otherwise. Remarque follows the daily reality of trench warfare: lice, shellfire, hunger, the closeness of men who cannot explain what they have seen to anyone at home. Home leave only shows Paul how far he has drifted from the life he left.
Anyone wanting to understand the First World War from the ground, rather than from generals' maps, will find it here. It is short, direct and plain-spoken, and it is still the book many readers recall when they think of what war does to the young.
Deep, inward-looking, contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
