Marie-Laure LeBlanc is a blind girl in Paris whose father, a locksmith at the Museum of Natural History, builds her a scale model of the neighborhood to teach her the streets. Werner Pfennig is an orphan in a German mining town who has a talent for radios, and is recruited into a Nazi training school. When the war begins, Marie-Laure and her father flee to Saint-Malo with a possibly cursed diamond, and Werner's radio skills lead him to the same city in 1944.
For readers who like historical fiction with two intertwined viewpoints. It gives a quiet, carefully built picture of the war and the small connections that link strangers.
Contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Story Seeker. Which reader are you?
