About the book

Eliezer, a fifteen-year-old Jewish boy from Sighet in Transylvania, is deeply religious and studies the Talmud and Kabbalah. In 1944 the Nazis deport his family and the town's Jews to Auschwitz, where he is separated from his mother and sister and kept with his father. Wiesel describes the selections, the march to Buchenwald, hunger and cold in the camps, and the tension between his need to protect his father and his own survival. The memoir also tells how his faith in God was shaken by what he saw.

It is a short, direct testimony for anyone who wants to understand the Holocaust through one person's experience. It is hard to read and equally hard to forget, and it continues to be taught in schools for good reason.
