Elinor and Marianne Dashwood must leave Norland after their father dies, because the estate passes to a half-brother and his grasping wife. In a small cottage in Devon, Elinor hides her feelings for Edward Ferrars, who seems already committed, while Marianne throws herself into a passionate attachment to Willoughby. Their neighbor, the gentle and older Colonel Brandon, has his own history. The story follows two heartbreaks, how each sister deals with hers, and what the society of the time expects of women without fortune.
For readers who like classic English fiction with irony and romance. It is easy to follow, and the final chapters bring a satisfying resolution to both sisters' stories.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Story Seeker. Which reader are you?
