Cathy Scarlet and Tom Feather start a Dublin catering business called Scarlet Feather, and the novel follows their small company's work. Maeve Binchy takes the reader through the clients and parties they serve, as well as the families and relationships on both sides: Tom's sensible partner, Cathy's husband Neil, and the difficult in-laws who complicate their lives. Their clients' weddings, funerals and dinners work as short stories inside the main plot, and the book looks at friendship, small-business stress and the cast of ordinary Irish characters.
Fans of cosy, warm Irish fiction and food-centred stories will enjoy it. It's a comforting read for anyone who likes a large ensemble cast, and it makes a good book for a holiday or a quiet weekend.
Practical, clear-cut and escapist; an easy read.
