Sin novedad en el frente

by Erich Maria Remarque

About the book

Paul Bäumer and his schoolfriends sign up at nineteen, filled with the patriotic speeches of their teacher. On the Western Front, they learn to survive artillery barrages, gas, and mud, and their friend Franz Kemmerich dies in a field hospital. Paul is kept alive by the experienced Kat, and a leave at home shows him that he no longer belongs there. Erich Maria Remarque, himself a veteran, writes in a plain voice about young men who return from the front, or do not, as emotionally old before their time.

A fit for readers who want to see the First World War from within the trenches. It is a classic antiwar novel, and its simplicity is its strength.
