Frank Starlight is an Ojibway farmer in the British Columbia interior who lives alone with his horses. His peace is disturbed when a woman named Emmy and her young daughter arrive, running from an abusive past. Wagamese, who left this novel unfinished at his death, writes about the slow building of trust between the three, and about the land that heals those who work it. It is a follow-up to his novel Medicine Walk, which features the same main character.
Readers who like quiet, character-driven stories of rural life and indigenous characters will find it tender. It is a short book about kindness and recovery.
Inward-looking, contemplative and thought-provoking; an easy read.
