Robin Perry, known as Birdy, is a young soldier who is sent to Iraq in 2003 with a Civil Affairs unit whose job is to win over the local people. He wants to do good and earn money for college, and he finds himself facing the fear and the moral confusion of war, as well as the effect on his own beliefs. Walter Dean Myers, who himself served in the Army, wrote it as a companion to Fallen Angels, in which Birdy's uncle Richie fought in Vietnam.
Teen readers and classrooms looking at modern warfare will find it direct and human. You can read it without having read the earlier book.
Thought-provoking; an easy read.
