In 1767, twelve-year-old Cosimo Piovasco di Rondò, a young nobleman in Liguria, climbs a tree after a quarrel at dinner, and vows never to come down. He lives out his life in the trees, moving from one to the next, hunting, reading, falling in love, and helping the community. He meets Enlightenment thinkers and writes, and takes part in the events of the era. His brother Biagio tells the story with admiration and some bewilderment. Calvino combines humor and philosophy in this fable.
A charming novel for readers who like imaginative fiction and historical tales with a light touch. It suits those interested in ideas about freedom, solitude and engagement with the world.
Deep, contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Deep Diver. Which reader are you?
