In 1965, Francesca Johnson, an Italian war bride in her forties, is alone on an Iowa farm for four days while her husband Richard and their children attend a state fair. A photographer, Robert Kincaid, drives up the lane looking for the Roseman covered bridge, and she offers to show him the way. The meeting turns into an intense affair, and Francesca has to decide whether to leave with him. Robert James Waller frames the story as one told to her adult children, who learn about it from her letters and journals after she dies, and who must reconsider the woman they thought they knew.
