About the book

In the Ireland of 1825, in a remote valley in County Kerry, Nora Leahy is widowed and left to care for her disabled grandson Micheal, whom the locals believe to be a changeling, a fairy child. Nora hires a young girl, Mary, to help, and seeks the help of Nance Roche, a herbwoman and healer. As the community's belief that the child is cursed grows, the three women attempt a cure that leads to tragedy. Kent bases her book on a real case.

Readers who like historical fiction rooted in folklore, rural hardship, and the clash between superstition and care will find a dark, atmospheric story. It suits fans of Kent's earlier novels and of Irish writing.
