In 1960, three of the four Mirabal sisters were beaten to death on a road in the Dominican Republic because they had opposed the dictator Rafael Trujillo. Julia Alvarez gives them voices: Patria, deeply religious; Minerva, a law student and revolutionary; María Teresa, a young follower who keeps a diary in prison; and Dedé, the sister who stayed out of the movement and survived. Their chapters trace a family's slow shift from comfort to resistance, with arrests, secret meetings, and fear.
A fitting pick for readers of historical fiction centered on real women and political courage. It also makes Dominican history more approachable for people who know little about the Trujillo years.
Thought-provoking; a moderate read.
