James Bradley, the author of Flags of Our Fathers, describes the secret diplomacy of William Howard Taft, then Secretary of War, who in 1905 led a mission to Asia with the President's daughter Alice Roosevelt. He argues that Taft made secret agreements in Japan that allowed Japan to take Korea in return for American control of the Philippines, which ultimately shaped events in the Pacific.
It is for readers of American diplomatic history who want a revisionist account. It shows how decisions of a few people can have long consequences.
Outward-looking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Evidence Seeker. Which reader are you?
