In an unnamed city, a mysterious Doctor Hoffman unleashes a war of illusions, in which desires turn into reality, through the use of machines that create hallucinations. Angela Carter's novel follows Desiderio, a minor official, who is sent to find Hoffman and to kill him, and meets strange peoples, such as river people, centaurs and a circus on his way.
It is for readers who like surreal, erotic fiction. It is an inventive and satirical story about desire and reality.
