Teeka is a young Lapp boy who is supposed to be minding the reindeer, but a group of wild reindeer arrive in the village before Christmas and steal the attention of the domesticated ones. Jan Brett illustrates the story with her detailed borders, which show side scenes of what is happening elsewhere, and with Scandinavian patterns on clothing and sleds. The wild reindeer start to lure the village herd away, and Teeka has to retrieve them in time for Christmas Eve.
Parents and teachers looking for a winter picture book will find a story with rich artwork and plenty of small details to point out to children. It suits ages four to eight, and anyone who likes Brett's border-heavy style.
Practical, outward-looking and clear-cut; an easy read.
