About the book

Quincas Berro d'Água is a retired civil servant who abandons his respectable family and spends his later years as a drunk and a vagrant in the port area of Salvador, Bahia. When he is found dead, his relatives wish to bury him quietly and conceal his bohemian life, but his friends from the waterfront come to take him on a last night out. The question of whether he truly dies, and where, becomes a comic puzzle. Jorge Amado writes in a warm, ironic voice and uses the story to mock bourgeois propriety.

Readers who like comic Brazilian tales, and who want a short work by one of the country's famous writers, will enjoy this novella.
