About the book

A gang of homeless children, the Captains of the Sands, live in an abandoned warehouse by the docks of Salvador, Bahia, in the 1930s. Led by Pedro Bala, they steal, fight and take care of one another, and the group includes Professor, who loves books, Sem-Pernas, who is lame and resentful, and Pirulito, who is drawn to religion. A girl, Dora, joins them and becomes both sister and lover. Amado writes about poverty, race and politics in his city with sympathy.

Readers who want a classic of Brazilian social fiction and a vivid portrait of street children will find it lively and touching.
