About the book

Ilhéus, on the Bahia coast in 1925, is booming on cocoa money, and the old plantation colonels are fighting modernizers over politics and honor. Nacib, who owns the Vesúvio bar, loses his cook and hires Gabriela, a woman who has fled the drought of the interior. She turns out to be a wonderful cook, and soon Nacib is in love, though marrying her does not make her any more willing to follow the rules of respectable society. Jorge Amado mixes local politics, humor and sensuality in a portrait of a town in transition.

Fans of warm, earthy Latin American fiction and of love stories with plenty of gossip and food will enjoy it. It is also a lively way to meet Amado's Bahia.
