Jorge Amado's tale for children and adults is set in a Brazilian garden, where Malhado, a spotted tomcat who keeps to himself, falls in love with Sinhá, a swallow. Their love is complicated by their natures: cats chase birds, and the other animals watch and gossip. Amado uses the fable to talk about prejudice, fear and the courage it takes to love across differences, with the lightness and humour typical of his writing.
It suits readers of all ages who like fables and fans of Amado who want a short, whimsical piece. Parents can read it aloud and find a second meaning for themselves.
Practical and clear-cut; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Curious Generalist. Which reader are you?
