A circle is missing a wedge, a piece shaped like a pie slice, and it rolls through the world looking for the part that would make it whole. Shel Silverstein's picture book uses simple black line drawings. The circle sings as it goes, notes the flowers and worms along the way, tries different pieces that don't fit, and at last finds one that does. But once it is complete it rolls too fast to stop and enjoy anything, and it has to decide what it really wants.
Parents and teachers use it with children to talk about what it means to feel incomplete, and with older readers it opens up a conversation about relationships and self-sufficiency. It is short, funny and easy to read aloud, and the final turn makes adults think as much as kids.
Inward-looking and contemplative; an easy read.
