Cele șapte luni ale lui Maali Almeida

Set in the heat of the Sri Lankan Civil War in 1990, the story follows Maali Almeida, a war photographer, gambler, and closeted gay man who wakes up in a crowded celestial waiting room. He has seven Moons to navigate the afterlife’s bureaucracy and lead his loved ones to a hidden cache of photographs that document state-sponsored atrocities and rebel massacres. As a ghost, he wanders through Colombo, observing the chaos of the living while avoiding soul-eating demons, desperate to settle his earthly accounts before his time expires and he enters the Light.

Readers of cynical historical fiction and political satire will find an unapologetic look at corruption and the messy reality of ethnic conflict. The book attracts those who prefer gallows humor over sentimentality when dealing with human rights abuses and state secrets. It strips away the romanticism of martyrdom, leaving the reader with a stark understanding of how information is suppressed during wartime and how individual lives are treated as collateral by competing political factions.
