About the book

Scout Finch looks back on three years of her childhood in Maycomb, Alabama, during the Depression. Her father, the lawyer Atticus Finch, is appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a Black man accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. While the town turns hostile, Scout, her brother Jem and their friend Dill grow fixated on their reclusive neighbor Boo Radley. The novel sets the children's small discoveries against a trial the community has already decided in its mind.

Anyone curious how a courtroom drama and a childhood can be told through the same pair of eyes will find it here. You leave with a close picture of prejudice in the American South of the 1930s, and of what it costs one decent man to act on principle when his neighbors will not.
