Luise Miller, the daughter of a town musician, loves Ferdinand von Walter, the son of the president of a German principality. The president wants his son to marry the duke's mistress, Lady Milford, and will not tolerate a middle-class match. Using a forged letter and intrigue by his secretary Wurm, he sets out to destroy the couple, who see no way to remain faithful and alive. Friedrich Schiller wrote this bourgeois tragedy as a critique of aristocratic abuse and class prejudice in eighteenth-century Germany.
It is a classic of German theatre, often studied in school. Readers of drama and of tragic romance, and those curious about the Sturm und Drang era, will find a swift and passionate play.
Thought-provoking; a moderate read.
