In 1939, Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist and member of the Nazi party, goes to Kraków hoping to profit from the war. He acquires an enamel factory and hires Jewish workers because they are cheap. As the Nazis begin to liquidate the ghetto and send people to the Płaszów and Auschwitz camps, Schindler uses bribes and friendships with SS officers to keep his employees safe, and he compiles a list of names to transfer to his factory in Czechoslovakia. Thomas Keneally interviewed survivors and writes in the style of a novel but with documentary detail. He shows Schindler as flawed, a drinker and philanderer.
Readers of Holocaust history, and those who know only the film, will find the book fuller and more ambiguous. It is a moving account of rescue.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
