The Mahabharata is the Sanskrit epic of the war between two branches of a royal family, the Pandavas and the Kauravas, over the throne of Hastinapura. Its central story includes the dice game that costs Yudhishthira his kingdom, the exile of the Pandavas, the humiliation of Draupadi, and the great battle at Kurukshetra, where Krishna serves as Arjuna's charioteer and delivers the Bhagavad Gita. Around that core are hundreds of tales, myths, and discussions of duty, kingship, and fate.
It is among the longest poems ever composed. Readers interested in Indian literature, religion, and storytelling will find in it the background to much of South Asian culture, and those starting out may prefer an abridged version.
Deep and thought-provoking; a demanding read.
