Maurice Hall is a middle-class young man who goes to Cambridge, where he falls in love with Clive Durham, a fellow student. Their relationship is intense but chaste, and Clive later turns away from it, marrying a woman. Maurice struggles with his sexuality in Edwardian England, where homosexuality is illegal. He seeks a cure with a hypnotist, and then finds love with Alec Scudder, a gamekeeper. E.M. Forster wrote it in 1913 and published it after his death, with a happy ending.
A good read for those who want a classic gay love story and a look at class barriers in early twentieth-century England. It suits readers who enjoy Forster's other novels or the Merchant Ivory film.
Inward-looking, contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
