A stuffed rabbit made of velveteen lives in a nursery on Christmas morning, overlooked among grander mechanical toys. Only the old Skin Horse tells him what it means to be Real: it happens to toys that are loved for a very long time, and it does not happen all at once. The Boy takes the Rabbit as his favorite companion, until scarlet fever ends their closeness, and the Rabbit is tossed out. Margery Williams wrote this short story in 1922, and it follows the toy through loss and a surprising final change in the woods.
Parents reading aloud to young children will find it a gentle way to talk about love, illness and what makes a friend. Adults who loved it as children often come back to the Skin Horse's lines about being worn and loved. It is brief, tender and easy to share.
Inward-looking, contemplative and clear-cut; an easy read.
