Orphaned in British India, Mary Lennox arrives at Misselthwaite Manor in Yorkshire to live with her reclusive uncle, Mr. Craven. Spoiled and unhappy, she begins exploring the moors, learns from the housemaid Martha about a garden shut up after the death of her aunt, and finds the hidden door. With Dickon, a boy who can charm wild creatures, she starts to plant and tend. The garden's revival is mirrored by Mary's health and by that of the bedridden Colin, a cousin she finds in a distant wing.
Recommended for children who enjoy secrets and for adults who want comfort. The book links fresh air, friendship and work to recovery, and it is as peaceful as it is hopeful.
Inward-looking, contemplative and clear-cut; an easy read.
